Exploring adoption through art
Friday, 15 Sep 2006

After Adoption supports artist Jessica Emmett's residency at the Chinese Arts Centre in Manchester, opening on 23 September 2006.

Having used our services as an adopted person in the past, Jessica is using 'sockbunnies' to illustrate the adoption process. Jessica has created 20 bunnies and will be offering them up for 'adoption' on the opening day.

The sock giver is seen as the birth parent, the artist is the foster family and her website is the adoption agency. The adopters are given adoption papers and are asked to update the website with their progress.

'Through my art practice I have chosen to explore the experiences of being adopted, with a particular emphasis on transracial adoptions,' says Jessica, 'I would be delighted if anyone with an adoption connection could come along and share their experiences.'
