What is the Contact Register?
The Contact Register exists to put adopted people and their birth relatives in touch with each other if that is what they both wish.
Part 1 of the Contact Register is for adopted adults to record their wishes for contact or non contact with birth relatives.
Part 2 of the Contact Register is for birth relatives to record their wishes for contact or non contact with the adopted person. To apply birth relatives must prove to the General Register Office their relationship with the adopted person.
You need to be 18 years of age and provide satisfactory documentary evidence to prove your relationship to the person you are trying to contact.
For example a birth mother would need to provide a marriage certificate if she has married since the birth of her child. Her name at the time of the adoption will be noted on the Adoption Court Order held at this office.
