Most women who have given up a child for adoption say that it is the most difficult decision they ever had to make in their lives.
In the past the needs of birth parents were rarely considered. It was thought that relieving you of your child and providing your child with a good home and loving parents served your interests. At After Adoption we feel that as a birth parent you are a parent for life even if you are not parenting your child on a daily basis. The process of adoption can leave you feeling alone, confused and powerless and you may feel unable to talk about your loss and have kept it secret for many years.
At After Adoption we have worked with birth parents for over 15 years, providing information about contact registers and instruction on placing information on an adopted person's file. We also offer intermediary services for those wishing to make contact with adult adopted people and support through a reunion. Additionally we provide counselling to address issues raised by adoption and groups to meet other people going through a similar experience.
Under the Adoption and Children Act 2002, adult birth relatives have a new right to apply for an intermediary service. This means that a birth relative can ask an Intermediary Agency such as After Adoption to trace and establish whether contact would be welcomed by an adopted person.
