At After Adoption we acknowledge the impact of adoption is lifelong and recognise that you may need support from time to time.
There are many reasons why you may need our services. You may be wondering why you were adopted and what your birth family are like. You may have settled down and are thinking about looking back at your roots for the first time. Some people are desperate to know more from an early age, whereas others have not given their adoption much thought until something acts as a trigger. Or, if you are planning your own family, you may feel the need to know more about your medical history. In the past adoptive parents were not given much information about their adopted child's background and often find it difficult to talk about adoption. Many adopted people feel a strong sense of loyalty to their adoptive parents and fear that talking about their adoption may hurt them.
Some people will already have a lot of information about their birth family and others will have very little; some always knew they were adopted whilst others have found out more recently. Many people feel that finding their missing relatives is the only way to satisfy their urge to know more. But it's important to realise that searching raises its own questions, expectations and emotions.
We can offer you information and advice about searching methods, tracing and reunions and opportunities to talk through issues individually or in a group. Sometimes the chance to meet other adopted people helps to clarify your feelings and experience.
We can also undertake a search on your behalf and act as an intermediary service if you wish to contact a birth relative. There may be a charge for this service.
