TALKadoption Therapeutic Camps and Short Breaks
ASF fundable residential camps for adopted 11-18 year olds
“The camp gave me as a parent a much needed break, and the girls loved it!’ Adoptive Parent
After Adoption has expanded its TALKadoption therapeutic residential camps offer for 11-18 year olds. To date the camps have been extremely successful, building the confidence and self-esteem of adopted young people, whilst offering a period of respite to parents. Demand for the 2-day camps is extremely high, within the first month of launching we received enquiries from over 500 families.
The residential camps are fundable through the Adoption Support Fund (ASF) as they provide a unique therapeutic service. SafeBase, our therapetic parenting programme, and TALKadoption therapeutic camps and breaks are within the scope of Adoption Support Funding and are one of the the few services referenced within Mott MacDonald Service Categorisation Guidance as being “Courses in scope".
To be eligible to apply for the fund the adopted young person needs to have been placed by a local authority in England, or be residing in England. The camps benefit young people by providing:
- Peer group support to build identity and reduce isolation
- Confidence building through team activities
- Improved self-esteem by making new friends and successfully overcoming challenges
We know local authorities will have many adoptive families who will benefit from this service. You can either infill on to our existing camps or we can develop bespoke camps to meet the specific requirements of your local authority, whether this be putting on a camp in a particular location or making provision for therapeutic workshops for parents.
We are planning next year’s camps already and these will take place at locations across the UK, such as the Lake District, Northumberland and Exmoor. Young people tell us how much they value being with other adopted peers and parents tell us what a lifeline it is to family life to know there are safe, therapeutic short breaks of offer. Activities are varied and designed to help young people feel empowered and inspired. On previous camps our young people have enjoyed outdoor pursuits such as archery, canoeing, laser clay pigeon shooting, a high ropes course, as well as social activities.
After Adoption works with over 70 local authorities and we are proud that our Head Office was recently rated Outstanding by Ofsted, who stated in its 2015 report: “A significant strength is the excellent support to adoptive families. This is wide-ranging, of a high quality, delivered tirelessly and professionally and very well received.”
With our expert staff and rigorous approach to safeguarding you can be assured that After Adoption will deliver a competitive and valuable service.
