In 1990, a group of people concerned about the increasing complexity of adoption met in Manchester to look at how they could support those affected by adoption. Out of this meeting, Post Adoption Support (Manchester), now After Adoption, was formed.
From this small start, with the support of many individuals and organisations, the organisation has continued to grow and widen both its breadth of services and the numbers of people we can reach. In 2000 we became an adoption agency as we believed that we could find families for the most vulnerable children – those with complex needs who required additional support in their new adoptive relationships. Between 1999 and 2004, we expanded our services to cover the North East, Wales, Merseyside and London. We also set up TalkAdoption, the only helpline dedicated to support young people affected by adoption.
In January 2012, we merged with Adoption Support, another Independent Adoption Agency based in the West Midlands. Since 1994, they have been providing independent support for anyone affected by adoption including developing intermediary work and supporting birth parents and relatives in Birmingham.
Today we are one of the leading Adoption Agencies in England and Wales, delivering a wide range of services that includes family finding and adoption support to all parties in adoption. We also provide specialist services such as the SafeBase parenting programme.
